Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best 2 Way Satellite Messenger
Selecting the right satellite messenger requires evaluating several technical and practical factors. This guide outlines the key considerations to help you find a device that fits your specific outdoor needs and budget.
Network Coverage
Most devices use either Iridium or Globalstar satellite networks. Iridium offers near global coverage including poles and oceans while Globalstar may have gaps in remote areas. Check map availability for your intended travel regions.
Ensure the network covers your destination before purchase to avoid dead zones during critical times.
Battery Life
Battery duration varies significantly based on tracking intervals and usage frequency. Some models last weeks in standby mode while others need daily charging with heavy use. Look for devices with power saving modes for long trips.
Prioritize models with long battery life for expeditions to avoid carrying heavy chargers.
Messaging Features
Basic devices allow text and location sharing while premium models support voice and photos. Group messaging capabilities are essential for team coordination. Check if preset messages are available to save text credits.
Choose a device that supports the communication type you need most often.
Durability Rating
Look for IP ratings like IP67 or IP68 which indicate resistance to water and dust. MIL-STD-810 certification confirms the device can withstand impacts and shocks. Rugged designs are vital for hiking or industrial use.
Select a device with robust protection to survive harsh environmental conditions.
Service Plans
All satellite messengers require an active subscription. Plans differ in cost message limits and contract terms. Some offer month-to-month options while others require annual commitments. Check what is included in your chosen plan.
Compare total service costs over time to ensure affordability for your usage.
Device Weight
Lightweight models are easier to carry in a pocket or pack. Heavier units may include more features but add bulk. Consider your tolerance for extra weight versus the benefit of advanced capabilities.
Opt for a lighter device if you prioritize mobility and compact gear.
App Integration
Many devices rely on smartphone apps for full functionality. Ensure the app is user-friendly and supports your phone model. Some units can send emails or photos only when paired with a phone.
Choose a system that works well with your existing mobile devices.
SOS Functionality
Interactive SOS allows two-way communication with emergency centers. This is safer than basic beacon signals. Verify that the monitoring center operates 24/7 and is certified for international coordination.
Ensure the device offers interactive SOS for reliable emergency response.
How to Use and Care for Your 2 Way Satellite Messenger
Before heading out activate your device and subscribe to a service plan. Ensure the battery is fully charged and test the connection in an open area. Register your emergency contacts and familiarize yourself with the SOS button location.
While in the field use preset messages for check-ins to save data. Keep the device away from thick tree cover or buildings for better signal reception. Charge the unit periodically and keep accessories clean and dry.
After returning remove the battery if possible or store in a cool dry place. Update the firmware regularly to maintain security. Review battery health and consider replacing parts if performance declines over time.
